Senior Backend & Platform Engineer – Fintech

We are building and operating a fintech and BNPL platform that includes backend APIs, batch processes, databases, mobile and web applications, and integrations with banks, merchants, and other external partners.

We are looking for a Senior Backend & Platform Engineer who is strong in backend development and also comfortable working with the infrastructure on which backend systems run.

This is primarily a backend engineering role, not a dedicated DevOps or SRE position. Your main responsibility will be designing, implementing, and improving backend systems. At the same time, we expect you to be able to understand and work with production infrastructure, including Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, databases, networking, deployment workflows, and monitoring.

You do not need to be a frontend or mobile engineer. We are looking for someone whose engineering strengths extend from Backend to Infrastructure and Production Operations.

Our infrastructure runs primarily on FPT Cloud and Kubernetes, and approximately 70% is already managed through Terraform and Git. You will work with our existing infrastructure engineer to operate and improve this environment, share infrastructure knowledge and responsibilities across the engineering team, and reduce reliance on individual engineers.

Experience with CI/CD, DevOps practices, reliability engineering, or security is highly valuable, but these are not separate specialist responsibilities for this role. We are looking first for a strong backend engineer who can confidently work across the boundary between application and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Backend Development

• Design, implement, test, and maintain backend services, APIs, batch processes, and system integrations.
• Work with Product Managers, Business Analysts, architects, and other engineers to translate requirements into reliable technical solutions.
• Design APIs, data models, asynchronous processes, error handling, retries, and recovery flows.
• Improve the reliability, maintainability, performance, and observability of existing backend systems.
• Investigate and resolve production issues across applications, databases, external integrations, and infrastructure.
• Review code and technical designs and provide clear, constructive feedback.
• Create automated tests and integrate them into the existing development and release process.
• Improve backend architecture, reusable components, development practices, documentation, and technical standards.

Platform & Infrastructure

• Understand and work with our existing FPT Cloud, Kubernetes, Terraform, networking, databases, monitoring, and deployment environment.
• Deploy, operate, and troubleshoot backend applications running on Kubernetes.
• Read, review, and safely modify existing Terraform and other infrastructure configuration through Git-based workflows.
• Work with our existing infrastructure engineer to share infrastructure knowledge, operational responsibilities, and technical decisions across multiple engineers.
• Help move manually managed infrastructure and configuration into reproducible code where practical.
• Troubleshoot production problems that may cross application, database, network, container, or infrastructure boundaries.
• Contribute to improvements in infrastructure reliability, scalability, maintainability, and cost efficiency.

CI/CD & Production Operations

• Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows for backend applications.
• Improve deployment safety through appropriate testing, automation, rollback procedures, and operational checks.
• Work with logs, metrics, alerts, dashboards, and other observability tools to understand production behavior.
• Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, and preventive improvements.
• Help ensure that critical services have practical backup, restoration, rollback, and recovery procedures.
• Automate repetitive development and operational tasks where doing so improves reliability and engineering efficiency.
• Create and maintain practical technical documentation and operational runbooks.

Security Contribution

Security is not the primary responsibility of this role. However, engineers working with backend systems and infrastructure should understand fundamental security principles and consider them as part of normal engineering work.

Candidates with relevant experience may also contribute to areas such as:

• Authentication, authorization, access control, and secure API implementation.
• Cloud IAM, network controls, secrets management, and secure infrastructure configuration.
• Dependency, container, and secret scanning.
• Technical remediation of findings from external penetration tests or vulnerability assessments.

Deep security specialization, penetration testing, and security governance are not required for this position.

What We Expect in the First Stage

During your initial months, we expect you to:

• Understand our existing backend architecture, Rails applications, databases, external integrations, and production environment.
• Begin contributing independently to backend development and increase the team’s implementation capacity.
• Understand the existing Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, monitoring, and production-operation workflows.
• Work with our existing infrastructure engineer to identify undocumented knowledge, manually managed resources, operational risks, and single points of failure.
• Begin taking ownership of selected infrastructure changes and production operations through reviewed, Git-based workflows.
• Identify practical opportunities to improve backend maintainability, infrastructure reliability, deployment safety, monitoring, and operational efficiency.

We do not expect you to redesign or independently own the entire infrastructure from day one. The goal is to gradually expand shared ownership of both backend systems and the production platform.

Preferred Personal Characteristics

We are looking for an experienced backend engineer who is comfortable going beyond application code when necessary.

Must-Have Skills

• At least 5 years of hands-on backend software development experience.
• Strong experience designing and implementing production backend services, APIs, batch processes, or distributed systems.
• Strong hands-on experience developing and maintaining production backend systems using Ruby on Rails, with a good understanding of Rails conventions, architecture, testing practices, performance considerations, and common patterns for APIs and batch processing.
• Experience with relational databases, including data modeling, transactions, query and performance investigation, and production-data troubleshooting.
• Hands-on experience working with cloud infrastructure and production systems.
• Hands-on experience deploying, operating, and troubleshooting production applications on Kubernetes.
• Practical experience with Terraform or another Infrastructure as Code tool, including the ability to understand and safely modify existing infrastructure code.
• Practical understanding of Linux, networking, containers, load balancers, databases, and common cloud infrastructure components.
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and Git-based development workflows.
• Ability to investigate production incidents across applications, databases, external services, and infrastructure.
• Understanding of monitoring, logging, alerting, backup, rollback, and recovery fundamentals.
• Experience reviewing code and technical designs.
• Ability to document important technical decisions and operational procedures clearly.
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Ability and willingness to communicate directly with an international manager in English. Detailed communication may be conducted through text with the support of translation tools, but you should be comfortable participating in regular work-related discussions.

You do not need to be a dedicated infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE specialist. However, you should be comfortable understanding and modifying the production environment in which your backend applications run.

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience with FPT Cloud or another private or regional cloud platform.
• Experience operating financial, payment, banking, lending, BNPL, or other high-reliability systems.
• Experience with asynchronous processing, queues, webhooks, scheduled jobs, reconciliation, or complex external-system integrations.
• Experience improving or migrating manually managed infrastructure into Terraform or another Infrastructure as Code approach.
• Strong experience with CI/CD automation and deployment optimization.
• Experience with high availability, scalability, performance optimization, or disaster recovery.
• Experience with application or cloud security, IAM, secrets management, or secure API design.
• Experience investigating or remediating findings from penetration tests or vulnerability assessments.
• Experience improving observability through logs, metrics, dashboards, alerts, or distributed tracing.
