Job description

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to own the backend services and data layer for our social sports platform. You will architect data-intensive systems end-to-end—from APIs and queue workers to the databases beneath them.

Databases should be your strongest area, but this is a backend role, not a DBA position. We need a system designer who happens to be excellent at data. If you prefer writing raw SQL with Kysely over hiding behind an ORM, and enjoy solving 'query degradation' across PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, and ScyllaDB, this role is for you.

Our Tech Stack

• Core: TypeScript on Bun, Elysia (REST APIs).
• Data: PostgreSQL (OLTP, Kysely/raw SQL), ClickHouse (Analytics), ScyllaDB (High-volume), and DragonflyDB (upcoming service).
• Infrastructure: Queue-based workers, cloud-native containers.

Problems You Will Work On

• Queries that used to be fast. Find why a query degraded as the data grew, then fix it in the right layer.
• Choosing the right store. Decide which workload belongs in which database, then move it there without downtime.
• Live migrations nobody notices. Schema and data changes on a production system, sometimes across several releases, designed by you and run in tandem with our infrastructure engineer.
• Making expensive questions cheap. Read models, denormalisation and caching that turn slow aggregates into fast lookups.

Key Success Indicators for this Role :

• Backend services are owned end to end across APIs, background processing, integrations, and the data layer.
• Query performance issues are identified and fixed as data grows.
• Live migrations and workload moves are delivered without downtime.

Your skills and experience

Must Have

1. Professional Expertise (Hard Skills & Experience):

• 5+ years building and operating production backend services.
• TypeScript at depth, including REST APIs and background job processing in production.
• Deep PostgreSQL expertise. You read execution plans, design indexes deliberately, model a domain from scratch, and write SQL by hand. We use Kysely, not an ORM.
• Breadth across OLTP, OLAP, NoSQL and in-memory stores. You can argue PostgreSQL versus ClickHouse versus ScyllaDB versus DragonflyDB or Redis, and name the tradeoffs.
• Migration discipline. You have changed schemas on live systems under real traffic.
• Production ownership. Containers, cloud deployment, and debugging your own services from logs, metrics and traces.

2. Communication & Documentation:

• Able to explain tradeoffs clearly across databases, migrations, and backend system design.

3. Personality & Behavioral Traits:

• Designs good systems and is excellent at data.
• Strong ownership of backend and data-intensive problems end to end.

Nice to Have

• ClickHouse, DragonflyDB, Redis, ScyllaDB or Cassandra in production.
• Event-driven or queue-based distributed systems.
• Full-text, fuzzy or geospatial search.
• Enough React or Vue to build an internal admin screen when you need one.
