Junior Backend Developer (Python / APIs)

Entry-level backend developer who will help build and maintain the Python-based services powering the Quality Realty Marketplace (QRM) and its re-sellable AI Native Marketplace Platform (ANMP). You will work closely with the Tech Lead and Middle Fullstack Developer (WordPress + Python) to implement FastAPI endpoints, support Grok Voice Agent integration, work with Cloud SQL (PostgreSQL), external data sources, Stripe payments, and other integrations — under guidance from senior engineers in a fast-moving startup environment.

Current engineering phase (May 2026)
Production business logic and many APIs still run on the WordPress plugin (/wp-json/qr/v3). New Python services are added using a strangler-fig approach: no big-bang rewrite. Your work often extends or bridges existing behaviour while we build FastAPI services (CCI, voice proxy, ETL helpers). Web clients use React/Next.js; mobile uses Flutter — you integrate with both via APIs, not only a greenfield backend.

About Quality Realty (QR)

Quality Realty is an early-stage AI-native SaaS startup building the future of real estate transactions in the Netherlands. We are developing Quality Realty Marketplace (QRM) — a voice-first, multilingual platform that connects realtors, clients, and service vendors (painters, movers, stagers, energy auditors, etc.) throughout the entire home buying, selling, and rental process.

At its core is the AI Native Marketplace Platform (ANMP) — a fully re-sellable, white-label, multi-tenant marketplace operating system. QR is the first vertical (Dutch real estate), designed from day one to power other local-service marketplaces worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and maintain clean REST API endpoints using FastAPI (or Flask where appropriate) based on specifications and OpenAPI docs from the Tech Lead.
• Support strangler migration: respect backward compatibility for WordPress REST where features still live in PHP; add or extend /api/v1/* Python routes without breaking live tenants.
• Integrate external APIs and real-time services — including Grok Voice Agent WebSocket proxying (under supervision), Stripe Connect webhooks and payment flows, and third-party data sources (CBS, Kadaster, PDOK, etc.) — using Python HTTP clients and SDKs.
• Write and maintain simple, efficient database queries (PostgreSQL via Cloud SQL) and schema migrations under supervision.
• Assist with logging, monitoring, error handling, and observability (Cloud Logging, Sentry).
• Write unit and integration tests; help document APIs, internal services, and tool functions callable by Grok.
• Participate actively in code reviews, follow team standards (ruff/black, mypy, pre-commit where adopted), and learn modern Python backend patterns.
• Collaborate with Middle Fullstack, Junior WordPress/PHP, UX, and Data Scientist (part-time) to ensure smooth end-to-end flows (voice → API → database → response).

• 1–2 years of backend development experience (internships, freelance projects, personal/open-source work, or strong portfolio are fully acceptable).
• Solid Python fundamentals (functions, modules, virtual environments, packaging, async/await basics).
• Basic experience building HTTP APIs (REST/JSON) and working with external services via requests, httpx, or SDKs.
• Working knowledge of SQL (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, simple joins, indexes) and relational databases.
• Familiarity with Git (branching, pull requests, commit hygiene) and collaborative workflows.
• Strong willingness to learn quickly, accept constructive feedback, and thrive in a small, supportive team.
• Good English communication skills (written & spoken) for team discussions, documentation, and reading technical resources.

Nice to have

• Exposure to FastAPI (preferred), Flask, or Django.
• Experience with real-time features (WebSockets, LiveKit) or AI/ML API integrations (e.g. Grok, OpenAI, Anthropic).
• Basic knowledge of PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy, or async drivers (asyncpg).
• Familiarity with Docker, containerized development, or Google Cloud (Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Cloud Functions).
• Understanding of RESTful design, OpenAPI/Swagger, or basic API security (JWT, rate limiting).
• Basic awareness of WordPress REST or PHP (you do not own the plugin, but you may consume or align with its API contracts).
• Interest in voice AI, marketplaces, or real estate tech.
