Remote - Backend Lead (ExpressJS, NodeJS, Postgres)

Job description

Key Responsibilities

1. Backend Architecture & System Design

• Lead the design and architecture of scalable and reliable backend systems
• Make key technical decisions covering system architecture, APIs, databases, and integrations
• Design solutions that support scalability, maintainability, performance, and reliability
• Contribute to architectural standards and technical direction across backend systems

2. Backend Development & Code Quality

• Develop, review, and optimize high-quality backend code
• Build and maintain robust backend services using Node.js and Express.js
• Conduct code reviews and establish development standards and best practices
• Improve code quality, maintainability, and overall engineering efficiency
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues

3. Performance, Scalability & Security

• Monitor and optimize backend performance, scalability, and reliability
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and technical limitations
• Implement appropriate authentication, authorization, and data protection practices
• Ensure backend services are designed to handle increasing traffic and business requirements
• Proactively identify and address technical risks and vulnerabilities

4. Technical Leadership & Mentorship

• Guide and mentor backend engineers through technical challenges and development practices
• Set engineering standards and promote high-quality development practices
• Support engineers in improving their technical capabilities and problem-solving skills
• Encourage knowledge sharing and continuous learning within the team

5. Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

• Work closely with Engineering, Product, QA, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions
• Communicate technical decisions, progress, risks, and dependencies clearly
• Drive continuous improvement across backend development processes and systems
• Manage technical debt and identify opportunities for technology and process improvements

Your skills and experience

Backend Development

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience
• Strong hands-on experience with Node.js, Express.js, and PostgreSQL
• Proven experience building and shipping scalable backend systems

System Architecture & Design

• Strong understanding of system architecture, system design, microservices, RESTful APIs, and distributed systems
• Experience designing systems for scalability, reliability, and maintainability

Performance & Scalability

• Strong experience identifying and resolving backend performance bottlenecks
• Understanding of database optimisation, caching, scalability, and high-traffic systems

Security

• Good understanding of backend security practices, including authentication, authorization, API security, and data protection

Technical Leadership

• Experience mentoring or guiding backend engineers
• Strong code review and technical decision-making capabilities
• Able to establish and maintain engineering standards

Communication

• Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
• Able to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions
• Fluent in written and spoken English
