The Job

Not a very long time ago, most of the average system engineers only needed to know about Linux and how to install/manage open source/enterprise software onto servers. That time is long gone now. Now there are Docker (which is pimped up ‘chroot’) and clouds, any kids can build their Linux servers using other people’s poorly made snapshots. To keep this profession alive, system engineers must know to do more with their specialty than just installing and managing other people’s software. Software engineering skills in system engineering profession is the answer.

There are never 2 products that share exactly the same business logic, so just installing something from GitHub or apt/yum will never really serve a product right. For e.g., JMeter could be great, but it won’t help stress testing a product in specific, user-oriented, multiple flows scenarios. A decent system engineer must learn to write a software themselves, specifically tailored for their product’s needs.

Your Skills and Experience

  • Thorough understanding of Linux (strace, tcpdump, awk, sed,...) is required.
  • Ability to provide 24/7 support is required when there is a Production outage. Midnight or early morning downtimes are very annoying, but it’s a part of the system engineering job.
  • If the below skills are not met, willingness to learn Ansible, PostgreSQL and Python is required.
  • Experience with AWS or any cloud hosting services is needed.
  • Experience with any configuration managers (Puppet, Chef, Ansible,...) is needed.
  • Experience with Python programming (not scripting) and PostgreSQL is needed.
  • Good English verbal and written communication skills are needed.
