Last year revenue was $100 billion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the biggest names in gaming is French company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.yesware.com\/tl\/ac9344698bcbd010dd4c6d85038187a56ca32ddc\/50906ad3849bc2d213db7c1bbfaba27b\/10b41bedec1dfc987f77a7dafc9726d6?ytl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gameloft.com.vn%2F\">Gameloft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With over 1,600 people in Vietnam, Gameloft has offices in HCM, Da Nang and Ha Noi.&nbsp;Users download over 1 million Gameloft games&nbsp;every day from over 100 countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I sat down with Gameloft\u2019s big boss, Sebastian Auligny, to talk gaming, management and tech careers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>What does Gameloft do?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We<strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>create, adapt, deploy and manage video games used around the world. Our work includes games for films&nbsp;like Spiderman and Despicable Me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our games run on everything \u2014 phones, tablets, connected TVs and&nbsp;even smart watches.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s challenging work. There is a huge variation in the capabilities of the devices, from low-end older phones to the latest smartphones. They run on powerful smartphones now instead of 128k of memory.&nbsp;Business models are changing too, with Apple Store and Google Play.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>When we met earlier you mentioned that not everyone should be a manager. Why not?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Everyone wants to be a manager, but not everyone should be one. Many tech people are unhappy after becoming managers or simply do not fit the job.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019ve found 3 big reasons for this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1) Becoming a manager means missing out on a lot of great positions and career paths.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Managers generally are not suitable for many&nbsp;high-level career paths that are filled better by&nbsp;Tech Experts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, Gameloft has Tech Expert positions and career paths in areas such as game features, game data analysis, 3D programming, etc. Most managers don\u2019t have time to develop the skills needed for these jobs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2) Many tech people don\u2019t enjoy management\u2019s focus on people instead of on technology.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a&nbsp;manger, your focus is more on people instead of technology. The challenge and daily work are very different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s not fun to give someone a bad performance review or manage conflict between people on your team. These skills are in huge demand in many IT companies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We have many areas where people can become Tech Experts at Gameloft \u2013&nbsp;platform, tools (responsible for developing engines, technical game features, etc), online (in charge of analyzing game data), 3D programming, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, one of our Java developers became a \u201cGame Monetization\u201d Tech Expert after 3 years. He became really good at understanding user&nbsp;behavior and what game changes would result in better play and higher revenue for the game. His role is now global, working with&nbsp;teams around the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Does Gameloft have opportunities for people who want to become managers too?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of course! We have&nbsp;many&nbsp;opportunities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We like to promote from inside. Our current General Manager of our Da Nang studio joined us as a Java programmer<strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>6&nbsp;years ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you\u2019re interested in management, just make sure you understand the 3 reasons why you may *not* want to become a manager first.
